Ozone Treatment

Ozone treatment in beverage production is the use of ozone (O₃) for disinfection, oxidation, and water treatment within the production process.

Simply said: Ozone is a very powerful oxidizing agent. In beverage plants, it is mainly used to kill microorganisms and to hygienically treat process water, containers, or pipelines.

Typical applications:
- Water treatment for process water or rinse water
- Disinfection of bottles, tanks, pipelines, and filling equipment
- Reduction of germs, yeasts, mold, and bacteria

Breakdown of certain odor-causing, color-causing, or organic substances

Why we use ozone:
Highly effective against many microorganisms
Breaks down again into oxygen after a short time
Ideally leaves no lasting chemical residues
Can reduce the need for other disinfectants
Important practical points:
The dosage must be precisely controlled
Too much ozone can damage materials or affect product quality
Residual ozone often has to be removed again before contact with the beverage
Occupational safety is important because ozone in the breathing air is harmful to health

In the beverage industry, ozone is usually not simply added directly to the finished drink, but is more commonly used for water, surfaces, CIP systems, or packaging. Depending on the product and process, however, it can also play a role in certain treatment steps.
